Fflur Owen Interview

I know you all loved my piece on emerging talent Fflur Owen so it brings me huge delight to write more about this lovely designer…even better, she’s given me an interview…

Sara: Since what age did you feel the urge to design?

Fflur: I have always been interested in creating, ever since I was very young.
My father is a carpenter by trade, so I guess I was bought up in quite a crafty house. One of my first memories is working with my father in his shed making little wooden objects. Both my parents have always supported what I do. They have been my inspiration along the way.
I’m one of those people that have to have something to do all the time; I’m constantly fiddling with something or other. I enjoy the process of trying to create beautiful objects out of very plain or unimaginative materials.

Sara: Nice, your pieces look like a lot of love and thought went into them – where do you get your inspiration?

Fflur: My inspiration is literally from everywhere; everything that I have ever experienced- from day to day happenings, to visual things that strike me, or stick in my mind. Things that I dream about, films and stories like old myths that I have heard or read.
I love the thrill of new experiences, visiting new and different countries. I think that Mexico is one if the most inspiring places in the world. It ‘s so full of colors, patterns and fabrics of all sorts!

Last but no means least, I go home to Wales to be inspired too, It is where my creativity started, and It is always the place that reminds me why I enjoy creating so much.

Sara: I fall in love every time I see the next piece you’ve created – what’s the feeling you get every time you finish a piece?

Fflur: The problem with me is I never know when to stop. The first feeling I usually get when I realise I have done nearly everything I could ever do to a piece to make sure that all the finishing touches have all been done, is the feeling of sheer exhaustion. I sometimes work day & night when creating – I get lost in the creative process, losing all knowledge of time.

Sara: We hear it’s a cut-throat world out there for an emerging fashion designer, what advice would you have for anyone starting out?

Fflur: Just do your own thing. Don’t let anybody obstruct or sway your creativity. To stand out you have to be unique, to be unique you have to be your self. But, I must also say that working in the fashion industry is very demanding and the hours are very long, you have to be willing to work extra hard as the competition is ever so fierce.

Sara: Our resident fashion designer and partner here at Emerging Fervour, Deborah Clements has just launched her label and new collection – what do you think?

Fflur: I think they look very interesting; I love the very rustic looking leather fabric. Please show me some more pics! Most of the time I don’t really make sketches of my creations, I just play around with the fabric to see what works. I but I really love the leather.

Sara: Finally, we’d love to meet you for a coffee and see the person behind the amazing pieces. Please stay in touch!

Fflur: Thank you so much! XX

We were also mistaken in our last piece on Fflur…I mentioned that the leather pieces were laser-cut, however this is very very wrong! Fflur actually hand-cuts all her pieces…superwoman!

Love this 2
