Emerging Fervour

Ok, so most of you have probably heard of Cecilia Cassini, the 10 year old fashion designer from California.

When I first heard of her I was pretty impressed by her story…

“Since Cecilia received her first sewing machine for her sixth birthday, she has not stopped sewing and creating her designs. Today, at ten years old Cecilia, is “the youngest fashion designer in the country – and maybe even in the world.”

Over the past four years, Cecilia has taken a few sewing lessons here and there; but, mostly, she has learned by breaking a lot of needles on her machine and ripping out a lot of crooked stitches.”

- and then I saw this video…

I especially like the bit where Cassini slags off her former teacher because she told her some fabrics didn’t match. Yes I know she’s only 10 but seriously, if I gave my 6 year old niece a sewing machine and some fabric – would that also make her a fashion designer? Cassini is what Justin Bieber is to the music world – it’s cute for a while but then people start to wonder if there was any real talent there in the first place. The fact that her logo on her website also includes ‘fashion designer – aged 10′ just goes to show that the emphasis is on her age rather than her designs.

Cecilia is clearly a very creative girl – but her designs need a little more maturity before she can be taken seriously in the fashion world – or my world at least. Focusing on school work right now wouldn’t be a bad idea – young and cute won’t cut it in a few years time.
