Beekay: emerging designer we love
I saw Beekay’s label during London Fashion Week at the ON/OFF section. In fact, I look a picture of the guy standing near the stand (I previously put his picture in this post) because he looked so wicked and Beekayed up with the hood and everything. Embarrassingly enough, this guy had nothing to do with Beekay as I previously thought, apologies to everyone and thank you, Beekay for letting me know! …but check him out anyway…HOT.
LFW was actually Beekay’s first collection that some of us saw back in September and WOW what a powerful collection, true to form and titled Post-Apocalypse, check out a couple of pieces from SS 09/10. To see the full collection visit Beekay’s site
His desire to explore the possibilities in the fusion between eastern and western culture, led Beekay to leave his native Pakistan and complete a fashion degree at UCA (University for Creative Arts). He then went on to work under Aminaka Wilmont for three seasons, which of course armed Beekay with a deeper understanding of the world of materials and its limitations.
You can tell where the influences for his collection come from. With films such as Mad Max, Tank Girl and Apocalypto, as well as platform games like Mortal Kombat, Beekay realised where his inspiration lay. His pieces speak a thousand words; Beekay is reinventing archetypal New Age characters in an attempt to visually foretell a post-Apocalyptic way of life.
